In the 4.0 Industrial Revolution era, the race for technology is at its peak with the development of Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence and the use of big data reshaping our day to day lives. However, this era is widening the gap between the rich and poor countries. Technologies must serve other purposes beyond profit alone and target vulnerable populations for a real, longstandig social impact, addressing global issues in order to promote behaviour change and contribute to the materialization of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Against this background, as an African entrepreneur, my priority is to come up with solutions that address the real needs of the African people, and of other developing regions, with a view to lessen disparities within and between countries or regions, and to focus on a future that is sustainable. I see technology as a means to an end and not driven by profit alone.

With this in mind, I have started a social venture and created the Community Tablet – the first mobile digital school that has recently been registered with the UK Intellectual Property Office. Its unique, innovative platform aims at bringing technology to remote rural communities in Africa, bridging the education gap and the digital divide, allowing better reach and inclusivity, and delivering the greatest impact.

We have created the first Digital School patented in the UK to assist rural communities in remote areas which are digitally excluded. Our product is called The Community Tablet and is a robust crate which can be towed by any vehicle or animal traction, enabling it to reach remote rural communities in developing countries with difficult road access. In addition, it is not dependent on utility providers as it is solar powered and internet connection is provided via satellite. This unique platform comprises up to 4 touch screens on one side of the crate, varying from 22 to 42 inches. These touch screens are made of hard glass, can be used for browsing and have all the functionalities that a normal computer has. On top of that, the software is adapted to the population’s needs and circumstances. It is user friendly and adapted to all members of the community, including the blind and visually handicapped through our voice to text and text to voice system. Animation and gamification are used to engage and deliver messages in an effective way. Messages are customized according to the needs of each segment of the targeted population. Our software is user friendly. Quizzes are used to assess the effectiveness of the messages delivered. The feedback is collected on the spot from each individual through our system. We get to know who has learnt what and how. On the other side of the crate there is a 110 inch screen with loud speakers for live videoconferences, to allow online teaching and play educational videos.

The situation in Sub-Saharan Africa and Africa in general is different, with our largest organization in the healthcare space (the government) unable to effectively collect and analyze healthcare data due to the disorganized and fragmented nature of healthcare delivery on the continent. We also realize that very few, if not any organizations at all are currently aiming to collect and use data analytics and machine learning to understand the changing landscape of African disease burden. Very few governmental institutions are currently equipped to do in-depth analysis of the healthcare landscape.

At the governmental and other supervisory agency levels, the increasing shift in the hea lthcare burden from communicable to chronic diseases, the increasing need for long term care and better management of complex chronic diseases, the need for better care coordination between health professionals to facilitate better outcomes and reduce cost, the need for patient education and empowerment in the care process to help facilitate better clinical outcomes, and the need to understand demographic changes and their effect of disease burden in order facilitate and improve healthcare delivery models all underscore a required shift from how we have handled healthcare service delivery on the continent.

For health care professionals and institutions, a majority of them are still using pen and paper which leads to scattered and disconnected critical patient medical history and information. The few who are using health Information System are burdened with the huge cost of acquiring such systems, constrained in sharing critical patient health information to the patients as well as other providers that may need them to make better healthcare decisions.
