Participating in the ITU Summit has been very good for WASPAG and our membership. We have already begun to see increased visibility and have improved our relationship with our sector ministry and the regulator. Being at the summit created the space and collaborative spirit to make this happen. During the four days of the event, we built important relationships with regulators in Nigeria and Sierra Leone in particular, as well as developing concrete opportunities for our members as incubator partners in Rwanda, with mhealth solutions in Sierra Leone, and within the innovation hub in Qatar. We look forward to participating in future summits – this event will now feature prominently in our annual plans. We also plan to enter the ITU Telecom World Global SME Awards in the future, and look forward to continued engagement with ITU.
Covenant University, Nigeria
I was present at ITU Telecom World with my own booth within the Nigerian National Pavilion, showcasing my low-cost, low-power GSM communication system for rural areas. Before the event, two companies reached out to me to schedule a meeting via the business matchmaking service, which led to extensive discussions and the imminent signing of an MoU. The event days provided me with an opportunity to interact with other participants, individual investors and captains of industry, from other countries and also from Nigeria. I was able to access decision-makers not normally available to me, present my solution and participate in collaborative discussions with a range of participants. Following a visit to my stand by the CEO of the leading telecom operator in Nigeria, we engaged in discussions which have continued after the event; I also was able to identify concrete areas of collaboration and partnership with a multinational investor present at the event. I benefited from reviewing the products and innovations from other countries exhibiting, identifying solutions which could be adapted to local challenges in Nigeria and initiating discussions on future collaboration. My participation at ITU Telecom World was deeply enriching. Coming from the academia, it gave me the opportunity to learn how to transition a research result into an industry product, and the connections required to enhance the quality of my research output and reduce my time to market.
Our aim in taking part in ITU Telecom World 2016 was to grow the project and our product’s credibility. The event was tremendously well organized, with many experienced people from the ICT sector giving great advice and recommendations, as well as the opportunity to meet potential investors. Winning the Telecom World Thematic Award, gave us media coverage throughout Rwanda and enabled us to attract more investment. Our clients believed in the platform and saw greater potential in us – we have grown from 13 schools to 42 this year, and expanded into three more countries in East Africa as a result of the recognition gained. This increase in clients has led us to improve our technology to meet their needs, adding features and growing the business in terms of both sales and staff. In the life of a startup, every founder wants their story to be heard, their business to be trusted and to grow. Winning the ITU Telecom Award makes all that possible – and even if you don’t win, just taking part allows you to be heard by different people who feed you with great insights that can change you and your business forever.
I was amazed by the traction and attendance at ITU Telecom World event. Many VIPs in my market sector attended, giving me many opportunities to network and receive valuable feedback on my business. I was impressed by the Awards process and the quality of the international jury – it was a challenging but very positive experience presenting my ideas in the quick-fire pitching. Taking part in the Awards gave my company and my project much more visibility and credibility. Winning second place in the Global SME Award programme is a strong marketing argument for our product pitches. Our blockchain project has seen a significant increase in popularity as a result, and is now being referenced in various fora. The Awards programme has triggered a virtuous circle for our project. gnúbila’s anonymization and secure sharing product, FedEHR, is now in the process of being integrated into the be-ys group, an ambitious European leader in the digital trust market.
ITU Telecom World was a great platform to showcase our solutions, offering great networking and visibility opportunities. We were the overall winner of the ITU Telecom World Global SME Awards, which was a great feeling especially as it was the second year in a row that Kenya won. We have now deployed in over 15 countries worldwide, and are talking to governments about major roll outs. The win has definitely impacted our business positively, giving us more exposure and media coverage around the world. We are now pursuing a more commercial sales model with the education solution. We have a new product, the BRCKMoja, which is a content delivery network and free Wifi connectivity platform that seeks to make internet connectivity available to the more than 800 million unconnected in Africa.
The exposure to the latest thinking and future trends in ICT innovation is priceless. We see the impact of this exposure in the way the market reacts to our new product offering and our global approach towards innovation. We left ITU Telecom World 2016 with a greater appreciation of the pivotal role to be played by satellite connectivity in creating greater access to internet connection to rural Africa, and how to leverage our innovations to provide comprehensive sustainable development solutions by combining health, education and disaster response in our product designs. This was only made possible by being exposed to the most current global thinking at the highest level. Thank you for the contribution you are making to our development. It is through such exposure that our company has been approached by no less than four blue chip organizations seriously looking at acquiring our SME.
ITU Telecom World provided us with a great opportunity to showcase our technology and capabilities on a global stage. Being amongst the award finalists was a great credibility booster. For a startup, proving yourself can be a hard and challenging task, and the audience often only has a vague idea of how exactly your product works and what differentiates you from others. So answering all the burning questions that our potential clients, partners and investors usually have, as well as getting valuable feedback from experts from around the world, was very useful and fulfilling for our project. We were able to get more from this event by getting in touch with people from different backgrounds and increasing our business network. We are experiencing steady growth in our business, and are already in smart technology towards Smart Farm and Smart City business areas. Our Smart Factory platform has already been implemented in several factories here in Korea as well as in Indonesia, China and Vietnam.
DASAN Zhone Solutions
ITU Telecom World was the right place for us to network with operators, government officials and regulators. Our participation in the event in an ITU Pavilion and a panel session enabled us to build strong relationships with them and positioned DASAN Zhone Solutions as a global network solution provider. We learned about the network market trends in Thailand and the real market requirements from mobile and fixed operators for FTTx, Mobile Backhaul and G.fast solutions. At the same time, we acquired partnership opportunities with system integrators and vendors who work closely with incumbent operators. This was a valuable event where we learned, built relationships and had great visibility. We expect to make our contribution to Thailand’s network industry development in line with Digital Thailand.
Japan Battery Regeneration
Winning the ITU Telecom World Award brought our company greatly increased reputation and credit – we got “treasure” from ITU in terms of its contribution to our future business growth. We have experienced excellent impact on our ongoing business discussions. In particular, the management of Nittsu Shoji (part of the global transportation company Nippon Express) was so impressed with our company’s award-winning technology that we were able to close a new deal with them in April 2016. Winning the Award has accelerated our progress going out to the world and expanded our domestic business, as well. We would definitely recommend taking part in ITU Telecom World – for an SME like us, we could never otherwise obtain the chance to exhibit at such a prestigious exhibition where we can meet leaders from major ICT companies and government officials from around the world. We focus on providing digital customer service solutions and telecom practices, so our aim in attending ITU Telecom World 2014 was to meet with leaders in the ICT sector. The event enabled us to achieve our objectives by providing us with the opportunity to meet many telecom groups in new and emerging markets, in particular in Africa. For us, ITU Telecom World is one of the best events in the industry in highlighting innovations, technologies and ideas shaping the future of ICTs, bringing together experts and sector leaders to share their latest services and successes.
Huawei always looks at which are the appropriate marketing events from a brand perspective and the key message and purposes, and this particular ITU forum is one of the best, especially the quality at ministerial level that visited Huawei’s pavilion and engaged directly with Huawei’s Broader Way Forum. This particular event is so important because it gives Huawei the opportunity to reinforce the theme of why we believe broadband is so essential to life, and allows us to bring together our global customers and case studies, to demonstrate how the market has moved on.. so that this partnership of companies and countries gets to learn. This type of collaboration can’t happen in any other event, and this is why we hope and expect Huawei will be continue to be here year after year.
The value of ITU Telecom World for Intel is the networking. There’s the government people here, there’s the industry leaders, there’s ITU, there’s people that touch everyone, and you get a very powerful group of leaders together and these are the ones with the resources to make the difference, to drive the change. If you look at the number of people here, if you were to get on a plane to try and meet the people you meet here this week, it would take you a year of flying. They are here, you can get groups together, you can show them practices, you can run workshops. It is just that getting together of decision makers and sharing of best practices, ITU Telecom World does that beautifully.
As a long-term supporter of ITU Telecom World events, we see clear benefits in terms of visibility, making contacts, closing business deals and establishing relationships through our participation on the showfloor. At World 2013, Cobaltray, one of the companies within the Korean Pavilion, had significant success in closing a major deal with Maxcom Africa, a Tanzanian technology Integrator. Maxcom aim to build up their mobile payment system partnering with Vodafone, using Cobaltray’s POS as an integral part of that system. The key to success is displaying the right product to the right audience at ITU Telecom World.
Our vision is to bring spectrum management to a whole new level through advanced systems for spectrum management, spectrum monitoring and spectrum control. Our aim in attending ITU Telecom World 2013 was to increase awareness of our brand and the perceived value of LS telcom solutions. We hoped to meet new customers, obtain new contacts and leads and increase the visibility of our portfolio. Our participation with a showfloor pavilion, in forum panel sessions and at social networking events enabled us to meet customers, discussing and finalizing a contract with one existing customer, and going some way to meeting our objectives.
It is fantastic for us having all of our partners here and knowing everyone is here. It gives us a chance to work out what the major trends are, what people are talking about, what the real issues are that are affecting the industry. That keeps us aware. It’s also a really good opportunity to connect with our partners and deepen those relationships or meet new partners.

Having participated at ITU Telecom World since the very first event back in 1971, we are clear on our aims in taking part: it’s about increasing our image and boosting our visibility in the ICT industry. The growth of the markets in which ITU Telecom is held is very important. We benefit from a well organized and professional event, meeting high-ranking delegations at our showfloor stand, raising our profile around the world and profiting from high-level contacts.
Taking part in ITU Telecom events has allowed Rwanda to really be at the forefront of the technological changes which are shaping our world. We hope that Rwanda will be the first one to finish with the digital migration, for instance – we were not the first to start, but for us after learning from what others have done, we are able to move faster and be the first to complete the migration.
ITU Telecom is a great platform to bring together government officials, the private sector, regulators, operators and leaders of the ICTs ecosystem, to discuss relevant issues, proffer resolutions or receive guidance in a bid to develop ICTs for users. Our key benefits in attending include positioning CATI as a pan-African project in the ICT ecosystem; meeting with leading representatives of private sector companies and international organizations; and sharing valuable best practices in masterclasses and forum sessions.
The information we received, the different stakeholders we met, the advice from more experienced countries and regulators as well as the visibility it afforded our country and the new relationships we built with different stakeholders, regulators and vendors – this was valuable return on our investment in a National Pavilion. We will start preparing earlier for next year!
SMEs at ITU Telecom World
We attended panel discussions on Government and SMEs, and Industry and SMEs, which was very helpful. We held B2B meetings with several companies at ITU Telecom World to discuss LTE solutions and meet technical teams, including Inmarsat, GEW Technologies, Ros Telecom, Spicenet Tanzania, Dasan Networks and GTL Saudia Arabia Ltd.
The sessions give a very good perspective on different areas as far as ICTs are concerned, from government, business and regulation perspectives. It is very good to see the special focus on SME because everyone is talking about ICT for big companies, but SMEs actually moves the development of many countries, many businesses and economies, and it is very good that the special focus is paid exactly to them within the framework of this event.
It is about sharing, about networking, about getting ideas. It is a great forum to connect, make new connections, share thoughts, and go back enriched.
Our project is very successful in Senegal, and for me it is a great opportunity because I have met many African countries, six of which have expressed their interest in my solution, which it is great for me.

An interview with Chad
What do ICTs facilities look like in Chad?
We have already laid 870 km of optical fiber from the southern part of the country to the capital city, N’Djamena. We are presently laying the 1,482 km fibre which connects N’Djamena to Adré and Sudanese border. In the short term, we will increase our outlets through our connection to Nigeria and Niger by laying on 699 km of optical fibre; in the medium term, 2,214 km of fibre will interconnect all our major cities, with fibre to the home connecting to the national backbone throughout the country.
Our three mobile telephone operators cover the entire country, providing approximately 36% penetration. Before the arrival of 3G and 4G, three Internet Service Providers were already providing access to 5% of the population. This figure has doubled since Tigo and Celtel started using 3G and 4G last year.
What flagship ICTs projects are in the pipeline? What is Chad’s dream or vision?
Our vision is to become the ICT hub of Africa by 2025, connecting the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, the north of Africa to the south, by optical fiber. Our medium term plan is to interconnect our 22 universities and university institutes, including the 200km FTTH project surrounding N’Djamena and connecting all major institutions to the trans-African backbone. Important initiatives also include the CATI African IT Centre, the Internet Exchange Point, and the creation of the Higher School of ICT Development (ENASTIC) as a cornerstone of our capacity building. We are also focused on creating an enabling environment for public private partnerships, and fostering small businesses (SMEs) in the ICT sector as key source of future wealth and job opportunities.
What are the major challenges you are facing?
Chad is a landlocked country, which makes connection to the optical fibre landing points very difficult. This is this is why we are driving our efforts towards interconnecting the country to the Sudan seaport on the one hand and to the Atlantic Ocean on the other. We are also facing a lack of skilled soft power. The energy issue is another challenge, creating price hikes in ICT services; a one minute call is priced at 250 CFA (0.39 EUR) as power is supplied by generators in both rural and urban areas.
What are the main benefits of ICTs for the people of Chad?
People communicate more, save time, are better informed, and are connected to the global network. E-health and e-learning are important services improving living conditions across the country; new developments such as e-payment and social media are changing people’s everyday life. Over 15,000 direct and indirect job opportunities have been created over the past 5 years thanks to the activities of the mobile telephone operators.
What were your main objectives in taking part in ITU Telecom World?
We went to ITU Telecom World 2014 in Doha to highlight ICT opportunities in Chad, and use this international platform to present the CATI project championed by our Head of State. We wanted to share our ambition of becoming an African ICT hub by 2025, and to explore how we can develop our international ICT exhibition, SITIC, into a mini ITU Telecom World for the Central African sub-region.
What was your experience of ITU Telecom World 2014?
We attended key sessions such as the Opening Ceremony and the Leadership Summit, as well as meeting with the incoming ITU Secretary General and other senior ITU representatives at our National Pavilion. Many participants were very interested in our projects, in particular the optical fibre national backbone and CATI. We actively participated in the Investment Workshop, and organized a very successful CATI Panel Lunch.
Our delegation was honoured to meet with the outgoing ITU Secretary General, key stakeholders from Unesco, and multinationals such as the Alcatel Group. We met with Huawei, who operate in Chad, including talks between our ministers and Huawei’s CEO; and took part in extremely useful discussions on spectrum management with leading LS telecom representatives.
How successful were you in meeting your aims?
The immediate return on investment was the sharing of best practices during sessions with other delegates. We were aware that many African countries would be represented at the event, with ministries, regulatory boards or both. The event enabled us to popularize our SITIC 2014 manifesto, reaching our peers in a global campaign to offer CATI to the African Union. In terms of capacity building, master classes organized by the ITU and discussions on various themes were very interesting for our delegates. Our parastatals were in dire need of reliable and efficient partners to boost their activities; several high-profile consultants and experts have now seen Chad as a potential business hub in Africa in addition to our tourism assets.
Return on investment is a long-term project; as a saying in our country goes, “you cannot sow the millet in the morning and harvest it in the afternoon.” We need an observation period and a permanent assignment to ensure pledges and actions made in Doha are sustainable.
An interview with South Sudan
What is the state of the ICT industry in South Sudan, the world’s youngest country?
Our country is poor and underdeveloped, with many differing priorities. We are looking for ICT infrastructure to be in place, to be up to date, to connect to other country. We currently have no landline telephony, and four mobile GSM operators reaching about 30% of the population. These operators are rolling out to rural areas, selling SIM cards and setting up internet cafe, with a direct impact on the economy and local entrepreneurs growing. But there is a lot of work to do to increase access and the benefits of ICTs.
What is your vision for South Sudan’s ICT sector?
Our vision is for an inclusive, empowered, dynamic and prosperous ICT-based nation.
And your strategy?
We have benefited from ITU experts in helping to establish a regulatory body. We propose connecting South Sudan to a submarine cable, but as a landlocked country, we need to confirm where our international landing point should be. We are looking for investment for our national fibre optic backbone. We aim to start in urban areas offering e government services. An ICT institute to train engineers and develop ICT skills at national level is also vital.
What are the main challenges you face?
We are a young country with many competing priorities such as education, agriculture or clean water which are seen as more important than ICT. We are trying to establish ICT as a priority for investment, with e applications as the key enabler cross cutting all these areas. Commerce, telemedicine, schools, universities can all benefit from ICTs – it’s a question of getting funding approved and allocated.
What were South Sudan hoping to achieve with a National Pavilion at ITU Telecom World?
We wanted to benefit from the exposure of our young country to an international event, to interact with vendors and regulators in the telecoms field, and see what new technologies are available. As a new nation, it is important to learn from other countries how we can best build out ICT in South Sudan, in terms of technologies and best practices.
What was your experience of ITU Telecom World?
Our delegation included the Minister of Telecoms, the Minister of Information, National Assembly representatives, industry stakeholders and operators. The Minister personally attended many of the Forum discussions, learning in particular on the regulatory experience in other nations. We made useful contacts with regulatory bodies in different countries, and learnt from other pavilions’ presentations in specific areas.
The Minister and delegation also benefited from meeting with CEOs from vendors and private sector companies potentially interested in coming to South Sudan to see how they can best participate and invest in the development of ICT in our country.
How successful were you in meeting your aims – and how do you measure that success?
We were very successful in gaining exposure for South Sudan, meeting with different regulatory bodies, countries and private sector companies, and making important contacts with regional and international partners. We met counterparts from the East African region, including representatives from Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya, to discuss cooperation on improving broadband and ICT infrastructure. Following our private meeting at ITU Telecom World in Bangkok, we have met again locally to continue our discussions and build the relationship.
We had a very good return on investment for our national pavilion in terms of the visibility we gained for South Sudan, the information we learnt, the advice we received from more experienced countries, the cooperation at regional level and the contacts we established with different stakeholders such as vendors and regulators.
